I hate it the most. It's the worst paid forum software in my opinion because I hate the themes for it most. They're all very ugly.

I'm not too familiar with IPB, so I don't really have any strong opinions there. However, you said that all IPB themes are ugly, but I just Googled around a little bit and found quite a lot of modern and sleek themes!

I used ipb for a brief period when they used to have a free hosting service. They were...alright I suppose. The ACP took forever to get used to, but it wasn't bad once I got the hang of it. I remember the ACP being nothing like phpbbs ACP. everything was laid out in columns unlike phpbb, and it was just a nightmare for a while. I don't remember what forum I had there, probably general discussion no less, but I've tried a few software before settling in with phpbb so my memories are vague

I wouldn't say I hate it; however, I'd never use it myself. It's simply way too expensive - especially for a hobbyist. It's only worth it if you're a big company, or you're just very rich.
