I think flarum kind of pushes for the layout which is similar to the discourse which is rails based and the flarum is the php based. So they are kind of similar in interface. But overall I'd say that flarum is good enough for the interface and also user management. I only wish they could have cpanel...

I don't think the xenforo is expensive. I think it is lot cheaper and you can pretty much save for it over the year and then upgrade as and when required. Compare this with the IPB and you would realize that this can get pretty strongly expensive over a period of time as well.
